ABOUT JOAH LUI

JOAH LUI aka Digi Majou aka Chui Su “Forever Green Tree” is a second generation Canadian born to parents from Guang Jow, Canton province and Hong Kong, China. Further back in time she and her ancestors likely came from Fujian, Henan and Shandong. Before that, she is pretty sure she came from rocks, rivers, sediment and the Sea. She is deeply grateful to live with her partner Brett Heneke and children Asha and Sorrel in the shíshálh swiya, and as a part of the Gumboot community known as xwesam/Roberts Creek. Joah is a filmmaker and interactive media artist who loves to tinker and create art with circuits using electronic parts, natural, found, and waste materials re-directed from the landfill.

Since 2014, Joah has been a resident media artist at the community-engaged arts organization Deer Crossing the Art Farm. Our current projects include Raising the Curtain (on Dementia); Submerged: The Rainforest Circus Tour 2021 (Qathet/Powell River); and the Emergence outdoor, interactive stories’ enlivening experience with shíshálh community members, artists and friends.

A seeker and propagator of de-colonizing stories, Joah practices Qi Gong as a way to re-join with her own Indigeneity and cultural teachings. Digi Majou is her performative/artist alter ego and represents her homage to the ancestors of the past, present and future. What was a question that came up often has become a living contemplation and momentum for Digi Majou.

“Circumstances, Qi and ancestors conspire for me to be alive here and now in what seems to be the 11 1/2th hour of life on Planet Earth, and so, how might I be/breathe/exist/do/say/live/create today?”
